Tulle (curtains) for the bedroom

Window decoration plays an important role in interior design. With the help of tulle and curtains, the required atmosphere is created, the degree of illumination of the room is regulated. The ability of curtains to hide our privacy from prying eyes is also important. All this must be taken into account when choosing tulle in the bedroom.

A bit of history and grammar

Light translucent fabric was invented in the 15th century by weavers in the French city of Tulle. The king's bride wanted to have a thin fabric, behind which only her silhouette would be visible, and it would be impossible to recognize her. To fulfill her desire, the king issued a corresponding decree, and Tulle's weavers fulfilled it. The fabric turned out to be very beautiful, so a dress for the future queen was also sewn from it, and the fabric itself began to be called after the city in which it was invented - tulle.

Now a little about grammar. The word "tulle" in French is masculine, and accordingly in Russian it retains its gender. Therefore, it is correct to say "tulle is he". The feminine usage - by analogy with the word "fabric" - is incorrect. In some regions, this thin fabric is called curtains. The origin of the word is different, but it means the same type of fabric.

What are they made of

Initially, tulle was made by hand from the finest silk, linen or cotton threads. This fabric was the privilege of the rich. Much later, machines appeared on which cotton material was made. It was already much cheaper. After they came up with synthetic threads, the assortment became more diverse, and the prices were more affordable.

Today silk is rarely used due to its high price, and cotton and linen are used only in combination with synthetic fibers. In its pure form, natural fibers quickly become dirty, turn gray, and even lose their shape and change their size during washing (shrinks or stretches).

Modern tulle is made mainly from polyester, polyamide and blended fibers. To obtain a smooth surface, polyamide threads are used. They are strong and resilient. Patterns on such a base are applied using polyamide threads. They are soft and look good in embroidery.

Tulle is of several types:

  • Organza. Elastic, rather stiff fabric, which is light and transparent at the same time. Can be glossy or matte. Creates elastic folds when draped.

  • Veil. Soft and translucent, drapes well. If you want tulle with soft, flowing folds, a veil will be the most beautiful.

  • Kisei or thread tulle (curtains). These are separate threads that can be intertwined in places, or they may just be separate threads. This tulle for the bedroom can be the second layer to create a decorative effect.

  • Mesh or net tulle. As the name suggests, the cells of such tissue are large. Mesh cells are of different sizes and shapes, densities. It can be just a "perforated" fabric or a thin mesh with embroidery.

How to choose tulle in the bedroom

When decorating windows, first of all, you need to think about what the room is intended for and, in accordance with this, select the color and parameters of the fabric. The bedroom needs to create a cozy, relaxing atmosphere and, at the same time, maintain privacy. At night they are responsible for it curtains, in the daytime - tulle. If you live on the first floor, or the windows of a neighboring house "look" at you, you will have to use thick curtains or thin fabric, but with numerous folds that will not allow you to see what is happening in the room.

How dense tulle for the bedroom you need depends on many factors.

The choice of fabric density also depends on where the windows of your bedroom are directed. If it is south or east, then it will be more convenient with dense tulle curtains that diffuse light well. It can be a dense mesh or organza with or without embroidery. For the summer, this option will definitely be the best.

If the room faces north or west, most likely there is little light, and thinner ones - a veil or a coarse mesh - will do.

In addition, you need to choose the color, as well as the presence of patterns. Here you need to pay attention to bedroom style... Many of modern design trends very categorical in this sense. For example, for a minimalist or high-tech style, only plain tulle without a pattern is suitable. It can be colored, but the colors for these styles are white, gray. There may be others, but it all depends on the overall design.

For another popular trend - Provence - it is possible to use colorful material. But we must look so that there is no excess of variegation. If the curtains are purchased with flowers, it is better to use a solid color tulle. There may be flowers in it, but the same color.

Most often in bedrooms you can see tulle in neutral colors - white and its shades, light gray or pale beige, cream. This is understandable: relaxation is required and the best background for this is neutral. But sometimes this monotony gets boring. In this case, you can play with color. It is necessary to look at the general design of the room, and choose a tulle to match one of the colors available in the setting.

In this case, there is another solution: hang a colored muslin over the white canvas. Effects can be changed by untying and tying threads, reworking knots. This combination looks very interesting.

Not so long ago, a novelty appeared on the market: tulle with a 3D pattern, or, as they say, “with photo printing”. There are a large number of drawings, they are, of course, beautiful, but in order not to overload the interior, the rest of the situation should be very calm. Everything is in light neutral colors, there can be several accessories to match the main color of the picture.

How to create folds

Most often, tulle is draped in the bedroom. This makes the interior lighter, more comfortable, creates a mood for relaxation. But how do you make the curtain fold? There are several ways. For folds shallow in depth, use a special curtain tape. It is available in any sewing store, has two or more threads, which are then pulled together to form folds.

It is sewn at the very top of the canvas. The line is made at the top and bottom of the tape. Then the threads are pulled together, achieving the desired effect. Just remember, for the folds to be expressive, the width of the original fabric should be at least twice the width of the window.

If you want clear, uniform folds that fall from top to bottom, you need to use eyelets. These are such metal rings that are inserted into the folded top of the canvas (pictured below).
